Journeys Through The Unknown is an anthology of supernatural stories for middle grade readers, but even as an older reader, I still found the book exciting, scary and enjoyable. Every story is a different supernatural adventure. There are evil gnomes, awakened Egyptian mummies, a young reincarnated witch, secret mountains filled with jewels and a kingdom made from sugar. Heather Beck is known for well-written, creative stories that have several plot twists. In Journeys Through The Unknown, she lives up to her reputation. This book has its scary moments, but it’s also funny. Beck is a master of blending horror and comedy. – Book Hooks

I like writers who can let their imagination run wild and just go along for the ride. Journeys Through the Unknown has the potential of being an enjoyable feast of humorous and scary stories that touch on various staples of the supernatural (vampires, witches, gnomes, nightmares) and give them a new, contemporary twist. The stories which are meant to be enjoyed by both children and adults, are satisfyingly long and offer lots of plot and action. There was always a surprising moment or two to make me smile. Clearly, Heather Beck has tons of imagination and loves to tell stories. My favorites stories were Gnome Genome, which features (obviously) gnomes, lots of pine needles, a vile potted plant and a wonderfully nasty surprise ending, and Kingdom of Sugar, where…candy strikes back. These stories were fun to read because they didn’t follow any formula but instead were driven forward by the venerable storytelling impulse of Making Weird Stuff Up. – The Short Review

Journeys Through the Unknown will appeal to middle school readers. Of all the stories, Kingdom of Sugar was the most creative and captured the aspect of scary in tune with the horror stories I grew up reading; it put shivers up my spine - highly recommend. – Round Table Reviews

Heather Beck takes her readers to places both original and unusual. The plots are unique, the characters are freaky – both good things for the supernatural genre. Heather Beck has a lot of imagination. I found myself cheering for the villains more than once – that’s always a fun thing for me, especially in eerie/weird story contexts. – All Things Jill Elizabeth

If Journeys Through the Unknown taught me one thing it is this: be cautious. Not everyone you meet is necessarily whom they appear to be at first glance. Journeys Through the Unknown is a solid collection of genuinely creepy tales that triggered as many questions for me as they answered. 4 stars – Aurora Reviews
